Shritantralok 1

Jai Shri Batuk Bhairavnath.

It has been a long time since I wrote an article. Today, I am writing about a scripture which I regard as an authoritative source and which itself contains a profound and hidden mystery.

It is said that its deeper meaning can truly be understood only through the grace of Bhairava (Shiva) and Bhairavi (Shakti).

This work of Abhinavagupta is filled with extremely profound knowledge expressed through deeply esoteric words. If I find the time, I will continue writing about it.

Now understand this: if one were to explain this scripture properly, even a single shloka contains such an immense amount of knowledge that it is difficult to express it in words.

I begin by bowing at the lotus-like feet of Lord Shri Batuk Bhairavnath.

The very Mangalacharana, the auspicious opening invocation of the scripture, is so extraordinary that words are hardly sufficient to describe it. What follows is like an entire ocean of knowledge.

The Mangalacharana

The meaning is:

“May that Supreme Reality from which Icchā, Jñāna and Kriyā—the powers of Will, Knowledge and Action—arise; which manifests as Consciousness, Bliss and Being; through whose power of manifestation this entire universe has appeared; which is the non-dual principle of Trika and which reveals itself through complete Svātantrya, absolute freedom—may that Supreme Abode, the Supreme Shiva, become established in my consciousness and destroy the veil of ignorance that conceals the profound secret of the Shiva Āgamas.”

Here, the single word Trika itself opens up an enormous field of explanation.

1. Parama Shiva — Consciousness, Bliss and Being

Parama Shiva = Cit + Ānanda + Sattā

Cit — pure consciousness.

Ānanda — the bliss or rasa inherent in that consciousness.

Sattā — existence or being.

The prayer is therefore to the non-dual Supreme Shiva: may He manifest within my consciousness and destroy the ignorance that conceals the profound mysteries of the Āgamas.

2. The universe is an expansion of Shiva’s Svātantrya-Śakti

“This entire universe is the glory of the power that manifests and reveals.”

According to the Trika philosophy, Shiva alone is the Supreme Reality.

Parama Shiva = Cit + Ānanda + Svātantrya

The universe is not regarded merely as something produced by an external cause. It is the manifestation of Shiva’s Svātantrya, His absolute freedom.

3. Icchā, Jñāna and Kriyā

Here we find the three powers:

* Eṣaṇā / Icchā — the power of Will or Divine Intention

* Vit / Jñāna — the power of Knowledge

* Kriyā — the power of Action

Through these three powers, the entire process of manifestation is understood.

Parama Shiva → Icchā → Jñāna → Kriyā → Creation

4. Ānanda — Cit — Bhū

The Trika teaching speaks of these three aspects:

Cit — pure Consciousness.

Ānanda — the bliss or rasa of that Consciousness.

Bhū — the manifestation of existence.

Therefore, the universe is not merely inert matter; it is understood as an expansion or manifestation of Consciousness.

5. Taddhāma Trika-tattvam

The word Trika literally means “three”, but here the principle of three is understood on several levels.

First — Shiva, Shakti and Nara

Shiva — Parama Shiva.

Shakti — His Divine Power.

Nara — the individual being or limited consciousness.

Second — Parā, Parāparā and Aparā

Parā — the supreme or pure consciousness.

Parāparā — the intermediate principle.

Aparā — the manifested world.

Third — Icchā, Jñāna and Kriyā

The three powers of Will, Knowledge and Action, as explained above, are another expression of the Trika principle.

6. Svātantrya-pūrṇa-prathā

This refers to absolute freedom.

Parama Shiva is not bound by anything external. In this vision, Shiva manifests the universe through His own absolute freedom.

He becomes the universe, becomes the individual being, manifests as Māyā and also reveals the way toward liberation.

7. Ācchādana-dhvaṁsi me

“Destroy that covering within my consciousness.”

The mysteries contained within the Shiva Āgamas cannot be fully understood merely through ordinary intellectual reasoning.

The two concepts of Māyā and Ajnāna (ignorance) are particularly important in understanding this concealment.

Māyā conceals the underlying reality and produces the experience that the world and ourselves are separate from one another.

At the individual level, this limited perception becomes Avidyā, through which the individual forgets his or her deeper divine nature and identifies exclusively with the body and ego.

When true knowledge arises, one begins to understand that Brahman—Shiva, Batuk Bhairav—is the underlying Reality of all.

Then the illusion of separation begins to disappear.

But such realization is not possible merely through intellectual understanding. It requires the grace of Batuk Bhairav.

Ajnāna — Ignorance

Ignorance places a veil over the understanding.

Because of it, the deeper truth—that the individual Self and the Supreme Reality are not ultimately separate—remains unseen.

A person begins to regard impermanent things such as the body, wealth and worldly pleasures as though they were permanent.

When, through ignorance, we begin to perceive ourselves as separate and limited, fear, desires, attachment (rāga) and aversion (dveṣa) arise within the mind. These become sources of suffering.

One means of moving beyond this is Jñāna—knowledge.

Knowledge may arise through the study of Vedānta or through the disciplined practice of mantra received from a genuine spiritual teacher.

Therefore, to the seekers connected with me, I always say one thing:

Perform as much japa as possible.

The universe itself is the Śakti of Shiva—Batuknath. The individual being is not separate from Shiva, and when ignorance is removed, Shiva reveals Himself.

⸻

What is the next shloka saying?

“I take refuge within my heart in that Sadguru, the very embodiment of supreme auspiciousness, through whose drops of compassion I have become liberated from the bondage of identification with the body.”

Deha-vimuktaḥ

This does not simply mean abandoning the physical body.

Its deeper meaning is freedom from Dehābhimāna—the identification that considers the body itself to be one’s true and complete identity.

Kalyāṇa-vāridheḥ

Kalyāṇa means supreme auspiciousness, welfare or spiritual well-being.

Vāridhi means an ocean.

Thus, the Sadguru is described as an immeasurable ocean of supreme spiritual welfare.

Kāruṇya-vipruḍbhiḥ

Kāruṇya means compassion and grace.

Vipruḍ means a drop.

Thus, the verse speaks of becoming liberated through the drops of the Sadguru’s compassion and grace.

Sadgurum

The Sadguru is not merely someone who gives a person a mantra or teaches rituals, worship and religious stories.

A Sadguru is one who is established in spiritual practice and knowledge and who, for the welfare of the disciple, gives the appropriate knowledge, mantra and guidance that lead the disciple toward the Supreme Reality.

Simply receiving a mantra from someone does not automatically mean that one has attained liberation or spiritual fulfilment.

The relationship between Guru, Ishta and Mantra should never be treated as separate in the spiritual path.

Without Guru’s grace, knowledge and spiritual awakening, the deeper purpose of the path cannot be fully realized. Therefore, I take refuge in the Guru.

Śraye

Śraye means:

“I take refuge.”

“I seek shelter.”

Taking refuge means surrendering oneself to the guidance and grace of the Guru.

Here, the Guru is not merely an external teacher. The Guru is also the consciousness and grace through which the seeker is brought toward recognition of his own true nature.

The Guru’s compassion is described as an ocean of spiritual welfare, while His grace is described as drops from that immeasurable ocean.

Guru-kṛpā removes the forgetfulness that keeps the seeker turned away from his true nature and directs him toward inner realization.

Dehavimukta evāsmi

“I am not merely this body.”

Through the grace of the Guru, my true conscious nature has become revealed beyond the limitations imposed by identification with the body and its associated conditions.

Taṁ Sadguruṁ hṛdi śraye

Here, I speak of the seeker moving beyond external worship and establishing the Guru within the heart.

In other words, the Guru’s grace ultimately becomes revealed within the seeker as inner knowledge and realization of the Self.

The Guru’s presence is not limited to the external form; the Guru’s guidance, grace and spiritual knowledge become an inner light within the seeker.
